Volvo Proximity Smart Keys
Volvo’s key system consists of standard intelligent fobs featuring passive entry/start capabilities; a keyless vehicle system allowing users to unlock, lock, and start their car without touching the key fob, provided it is within close proximity, an accessory buttonless Key Tag, plus specialized programmable keys like the "Care Key" formerly Red Key. Newer models like the EX30 utilize phone-based digital keys or NFC key cards.
Key Types and Features
Standard Key: This is the primary remote key fob equipped with buttons for various functions. It can be linked to a driver profile to save personal car settings. It also contains a mechanical key blade for manual access in case of a dead battery in either the car or fob.
Care Key: This key, typically orange, functions like a standard key but is linked to a specific, restricted driver profile that allows the owner to limit speed and audio volume, adaptive cruise control, ideal for loaning the car to a new driver or valet service.
Key Tag: Available as an accessory on some models, this is a smaller, lighter, and buttonless key that is waterproof. It supports keyless entry and starting, but its battery cannot be replaced and it lacks the manual key blade.
Key Card: A thin, wallet-sized NFC card (Near Field Communication) used to lock/unlock by tapping the driver-side door handle and start by placing it on the wireless charging pad.
Digital Key (Smartphone): Allows the phone to act as the key via app/Bluetooth, though some users find this less convenient than traditional fobs.
Key Functions
Locking: Press Lock button once locks all doors including the tailgate, and arms the alarm.
Press and hold Lock button: Closes all windows, the moonroof, and sunshade if equipped.
Touch door handle with key nearby: Locks the car with keyless entry.
Unlocking: Press Unlock button once unlocks the driver's door and disarms the alarm, it can be set to unlock all doors in settings.
Press Unlock button twice in succession: Unlocks all doors and the tailgate.
Press and hold Unlock button: Opens all windows simultaneously to air out the car.
Pull door handle with key nearby: Unlocks the car with keyless entry.
Tailgate: Press Tailgate button once unlocks the tailgate only and disarms its alarm.
Press and hold Tailgate button: Automatically opens or closes the power-operated tailgate if equipped.
Panic Alarm: Press and hold Panic button for 3+ seconds, or press twice quickly Activates the horn and direction indicators in an emergency.
Starting the Car: Press the start button and the car can be started as long as a valid key is detected inside the front part of the passenger compartment.
Security and Convenience
Keyless Entry/Start: For vehicles equipped with "Passive Entry" systems, the car can be locked, unlocked, and started without the user ever taking the key out of their pocket or purse, using proximity sensors in the door handles and interior.
Driver Profiles: Keys can be linked to specific driver profiles, allowing the car to automatically adjust settings like seat position and mirror angles to the user's preferences.
Lost Keys: If a key is lost, a replacement can be acquired through Automotive & Commercial Locksmith Inc. Store, who can erase the code of the lost key from the system to maintain security.
Remote Start: This feature is typically managed through the Volvo Cars app, not directly from the key fob buttons on modern models.
Common Key System Aspects
Key Programming: If a key is lost, a new one must be programmed by a dealer or authorized workshop, which requires all existing keys to be present to erase the lost key from the system.
User Profiles: Keys can be linked to specific driver profiles, automatically adjusting settings like seat position and mirrors upon unlocking.
Emergency Access: If the key fob battery dies, the hidden mechanical key blade can be accessed to unlock the driver's door.
