BMW diamond shaped remote head key

The traditional ignition lock cylinder using internal tumblers that align with a series of cuts or notches on the key to allow rotation was used by BMW in many of their models up until 2010. Each battery type has a limited number of cycles it can perform before its ability to hold a charge degrades and when that happen it is goodbye to the convenience of the remote functions.

This kind of diamond-shaped BMW key fob was built to charge inductively while you are driving. When the key is in the ignition with the car running, the battery in the key is recharge via inductive coupling, charge by EWS ring antenna, a circular antenna located around the ignition key switch; EWS (Elektronische Wegfahr Sperre): The German term for "Electronic Immobilizer.

The transponder on the original key is part of the circuit board assembly. On the aftermarket key remote control and transponder are two separate pieces, with a replaceable battery to power the remote control.

BMW models that have a comfort access keyless entry system let you open the car door and start up your engine without touching the key. All that the driver needs to do is have the key on your person or nearby, and the sensors will detect the key allowing the car to start with the push of a button.

Some models will also close any open windows and roof when remotely locking the car. To close the windows of a BMW with the key fob, press and hold the lock button on the key fob until all open windows and the sunroof are closed. Remote keyless fobs also feature a panic button which activates the car alarm as a standard feature.

Unlocking your car has never been more convenient with BMW Comfort Access means you don’t need to use a key or do anything except for touching the handle.

Comfort Access keyless entry consists of handles with special remote sensors. They recognize your key at a range of up to 5ft, even if it's in your pocket or bag. This way you’ll be able to unlock your car by placing your hand inside the handle, or lock it with a single touch on the handle ridges. The sound signal will let you know when the doors are open or closed.

Comfort Access system allows you to customize the keyless entry process. In the menu settings you can choose to lock/unlock all doors or only the driver’s door on the first touch. In some models, the system can also be set to automatically close the windows and sunroof, and fold in the mirrors.

The keyless entry extends to opening your trunk as well by just touching the handle and the trunk lid will unlock. On newer models touchless opening and closing of the cargo area is possible, sensors detect specific foot movements near the center of the trunk, and the trunk opens or closes.
