FOBIK (Frequency Operated Button Ignition Key) has a square-shaped tip that plugs into the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) Module in your vehicle and turns like a traditional ignition key. The traditional integrated keyless entry remote and key were replaced by the new “FOBIK” keyless entry remote, which included a redesigned ignition slot.

Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep FOBIK keys are available with three to seven buttons. The highest number of buttons is found on minivans, where the additional buttons operate the rear and side doors as well as the remote start function.

Looking at a 2010 listing of Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles, every model came with either a remote head key or a FOBIK option.

Chrysler/Dodge “Keyless GO” proximity systems were first introduced on the 2009 Dodge Challenger as optional upgrades. They were later expanded to the 2011–2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee, among other models. These vehicles have a removable “Push to Start” button. The button snaps into place and can be easily removed to expose a hidden FOBIK ignition switch behind it. When the proximity FOBIK remote is recognized inside the vehicle, the driver can press the brake pedal and then press the “Start” button to start and stop the engine.

The Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) Module in your vehicle reads the chip in the key and sends that information to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). If the information matches the one stored in the PCM, the PCM sends a response signal verifying that it is the correct key, and the vehicle is allowed to start.

Common Fobik System DTCs

A Fobik (Fob-Integrated-Key) system diagnostic trouble code (DTC) usually points to a communication or programming failure between the key fob and the vehicle's Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) or Radio Frequency Hub (RFH)

B1A35: Unidentified key communication error (the WIN/RF Hub cannot read or detect an ID from the inserted or nearby Fobik).

B1A6C: Secret key mismatch (the Fobik sends a key code that does not match the value stored in the vehicle module).

P0513: Invalid immobilizer/smart key (the system recognizes a key is present or inserted, but it is not programmed or authorized to start the engine).

B1A27 / B1A29: WIN programming performance or Sentry Key base station mismatch errors.

Troubleshooting Steps

Test a spare key: Try a known good, working spare Fobik to see if the error code clears and the vehicle starts. If the spare works, the original key is faulty or unprogrammed.

Check the correct key type: Ensure you are using the exact matching part number and chip variant (e.g., Philips 46 chip variants), as visually identical Fobiks for Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler can have incompatible internal transponders.

Inspect the ignition/button node: Verify that the WIN or Keyless Ignition Node (KIN) recognizes physical insertion or proximity signals and that related fuses are intact.

Clear codes and re-sync: Use a compatible advanced diagnostic scan tool (like WiTech or an automotive locksmith programmer) to record, clear DTCs, and properly relearn or sync the keys using the vehicle's Sentry Key PIN.

If you are dealing with a faulty ignition, why a used WIN Module can’t simply be swapped?

A used or salvage Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module is not reusable or interchangeable between different vehicles without professional resetting, because it is permanently locked to the original vehicle's VIN and security system upon first programming.

The WIN module acts as the central security and ignition brain. It securely stores the vehicle identification number (VIN) and secret cryptographic keys.

Once a factory or aftermarket WIN module is programmed to a specific Powertrain Control Module (PCM), it rejects keys and signals from any other vehicle.

Installing a junkyard or used WIN module straight out of another car will trigger the security immobilizer, causing the dashboard security light to flash and preventing the engine from cranking.

How to Properly Replace a WIN Module

Order a new WIN module from the dealer by providing your VIN number. When using a new, original part, the original FOBIKs can be reused. To program the new module, the password from the original WIN module is required. If it is not possible to obtain the password that way, you can get it from the dealer or a third party using the VIN. After entering the PIN with your programmer, reprogram the original key. Done.

You can use the Wonder WIN Module. With the Wonder WIN Module, you will be able to replace WIN modules as simply as Plug and Play. Wonder WIN Modules are original Mopar parts and come with a two-year warranty. Simply remove the old WIN and plug in the NEW Wonder WIN Module. Then, program the NEW FOBIK or POD keys using your key programmer and the PIN provided with the Wonder WIN Module. Once a Wonder WIN Module has keys programmed into it, it CANNOT be reused on a different vehicle. These modules will not work on any vehicle equipped with Keyless Go (Prox) Fobik Keys. These modules will configure to vehicles with Keyless Go (Prox) Fobik Keys, but the Prox function will not work. The Fobik will have to be placed in the WIN Module in order to start the vehicle.
